Ssewungu Joseph Gonzaga is a visionary leader, co-founder of the Haemophilia Foundation Association Uganda (HAU) and a steadfast advocate for health equity. His journey into the world of rare blood disorders is deeply personal, driven by his experience as a father to a child living with severe Haemophilia B (Factor IX deficiency). This firsthand encounter with the challenges of the condition ranging from medical emergencies to the need for consistent specialised care fuelled his lifelong commitment to transforming the landscape for affected families in Uganda. Joseph brings a wealth of leadership experience and a collaborative mindset to the organization and has been instrumental in shaping the foundation’s mission, moving it from a grassroots initiative to a recognized national entity. His approach to advocacy is rooted in the firm belief that the focus should remain on solutions rather than blame; he famously maintains that no one should be "pinpointed" for the challenges they face, but rather should be met with the necessary support and resources to thrive. His leadership style is characterized by empathy, inclusivity, and a focus on community-led development. By championing a culture of support over criticism, he has fostered a resilient environment within HFU where patients and caregivers feel empowered to lead dignified lives and working to ensure that every child with haemophilia has access to the life-saving treatment and social support they deserve.
